  • Topic Specific Questions

What does the difference in relative age of the maria and highlands tell us about the Moon’s history?

The moon had volcanoes at one point. The large impact basins on the moon used to be filled with lava. While the rest of the moon was pretty much the same since it formed, being bombarded with asteroids.

Why do scientists suppose the moon formed with a molten surface?

The rock samples that came back from the Apollo missions provided evidence that the moon had been molten during its formation and was covered with a deep ocean of magma for millions of years.

How does the impact hypothesis explain the moon’s lack of iron?

The moon was formed due to a planet slightly smaller than Earth, crashing into it. Intense heat from the impact vaporized lighter materials, including most of the iron which then fell into the Earth’s core. Most of the moon is composed of the rocky mantle from both of the planets. Fun Fact: The planet that crashed into the Earth was named after the mythical Greek Titan who was the mother of Selene, the goddess of the Moon. "Theia"
